Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS is a hormonal disorder found in women of reproductive age group (approx. 18-45 years). Its incidence seems to be rising with changing lifestyle of modern generation.

-Women with PCOS / PCOD may have irregular periods and multiple small cysts or fluid filled sacs in one or both ovaries.

-They often have increased male hormones in their blood.

-The exact cause for PCOS disorder or PCOD can be attributed to disturbed hypothalamic pituitary ovarian axis, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, genetic and environmental factors like life style and dietary habits.

-It can cause weight gain, infertility, gestational diabetes etc.

-Women with PCOD are more prone to type 2 diabetes in later life.

Symptoms of PCOS are:

  1. Irregular periods: It is the most common symptom of PCOS. Missed cycles, prolonged or infrequent menstrual cycles are one of the signs of PCOS. For instance, you might have longer than 45 days of the cycle.
  2. Excess androgen: Elevated androgen levels may result in physical signs in the body. You might see the characters like facial hair, excess body hair, occasional severe acne or pimples, male-pattern baldness. This kind of excess growth of hair is called hirsutism.

  4. Polycystic ovaries: PCOS is an eponymous term as it means polycystic ovaries. It is one of the major symptoms of PCOS. Hence, the ovaries fail to function, which leads to delayed or infrequent periods.
